Benefits of the chains
What are the advantages of chains over leather, nylon, and plastic?
What are the advantages of chains over leather, nylon, and plastic?
Durability
Metal is significantly more resistant to wear, weather, and moisture than other materials. Leather becomes brittle and tears over time, nylon frays, and plastic can break. A high-quality chain lasts for many years with proper care.
Easy care
Chains made of stainless steel or CUROGAN are easy to clean with mild dish soap and dry quickly. Leather and nylon absorb moisture and odors, require more effort to care for, and dry more slowly.
Coat-friendly
Depending on the link shape (e.g., medium or long links), chains reduce hair breakage on long or fine coats, while nylon and some plastics tend to cause more friction and hair breakage.
Hygiene
Metal is more odor-neutral and doesn't absorb bacteria or moisture the way porous leather or nylon can.
Why chains for anxious dogs?
Why chains for anxious dogs?
Martingale chains, when correctly sized, are especially well suited for anxious dogs. They reliably prevent the dog from slipping out of the collar, for example during a moment of fright, without choking. The controlled pull of the martingale chain keeps the collar correctly positioned on the neck at all times, without exerting constant pressure.
Why choose a chain over a collar?
Why choose a chain over a collar?
Metal chains stand out for their significantly higher breaking load and remain shape-stable even under strong pulling. They are durable, weather-resistant, and remarkably easy to care for: a mild dish soap is enough, they dry quickly, and don't absorb odors.

Product information
How do I find the right length for my dog?
How do I find the right length for my dog?
How you measure depends on the version:
Without a hook (pulled over the head): Measure the neck circumference and add an allowance depending on the version – martingale chain: +5–8 cm, without pull stop: +5–7 cm (less for 2 mm chains). Also measure the head circumference at its widest point – the chain length must be greater than the head circumference.
With a SPRENGER hook: No need to pull over the head, simply go by the neck circumference.
Exact tolerances are always listed on the respective product page. Important: The chain must not choke when pulled taut.

What is CUROGAN, and why should I choose a chain made of CUROGAN?
What is CUROGAN, and why should I choose a chain made of CUROGAN?
CUROGAN is 100% nickel-free and therefore offers a good alternative for dogs that have previously reacted allergically to wearing conventional chains.
For many dogs with light-colored coats, CUROGAN has also proven to be an excellent alternative to stainless steel. However, keep in mind that even with CUROGAN, coat discoloration cannot be completely ruled out if you have a very light-colored or white dog.
Why should I choose a chain made of stainless steel?
Why should I choose a chain made of stainless steel?
All stainless steel variants belong to our premium quality range and stand out for their robustness, high breaking loads, and durability. Stainless steel is the hardest of our materials and is therefore also suitable for very large dogs.
When choosing, still pay attention to selecting the right wire gauge based on your dog's weight and size.
Why shouldn't I use a black chain for a light-colored dog?
Why shouldn't I use a black chain for a light-colored dog?
Chains made of blackened stainless steel undergo a surface color change achieved through an electroplating process. During use, natural abrasion occurs, which would cause discoloration on light-colored fur.
You would see this on your light-colored dog as a gray ring around the neck. For this reason, a blackened chain is not suitable for light-colored dogs.
Which material is saltwater-resistant?
Which material is saltwater-resistant?
All chains made of stainless steel are suitable for use near the coast or under permanently damp conditions.
When should I replace my dog's chain collar?
When should I replace my dog's chain collar?
It's important – especially, but not only, with CUROGAN chains – to regularly check the individual links for wear and replace them in time to ensure your dog's safety at all times.
If no wear is visible and there are no other hazards, such as sharp edges, you can continue using the chain without concern.

Proper Fitting
What do I need to keep in mind when my dog wears a chain?
What do I need to keep in mind when my dog wears a chain?
Make sure the chain fits correctly: not too tight and not too loose, so it can neither get caught nor be pulled off over the head. Regularly check the condition of the links and the closure for wear or damage.
Prong collars should only ever be used for training purposes and never without additional backup security. Your dog must never be left unattended while wearing a prong collar. The prong collar should also always be removed during car rides or when in a crate.
How should the chain "fit"?
How should the chain "fit"?
A chain collar should hang loosely around the dog's neck without restricting its movement. A chain collar should also never be used in a way that could choke the dog.
Why should I use a prong collar with a martingale chain?
Why should I use a prong collar with a martingale chain?
A prong collar is used to correct unwanted behavior in your dog through a brief impulse. The assembly chain allows you to give a short impulse by taking up the leash and then immediately releasing tension again. This way, an impulse is only applied to your dog when there's pull on the leash.
After some time of training, your dog may come to recognize the sound the assembly chain makes when the leash is taken up as a correction in itself, so that an impulse from the prong collar's points is no longer needed.
Do I need to check my prong collar regularly?
Do I need to check my prong collar regularly?
Since the links are opened and closed each time you put on or take off the collar, they should be checked regularly and gently bent back into shape if needed, to ensure enough tension and a secure closure.
Replacing the center plate with the proven ClicLock closure makes it even easier to put on the collar and also protects the links from wear. Replacement links are available in all qualities and wire gauges for SPRENGER prong collars.
