Dog hunting equipment

Basic equipment includes a collar and leash – depending on the type of hunting, this is supplemented with a signal collar, dog coat or vest, retrieving dummy or bite tug for training, a tracking leash for blood tracking, and if needed, a life jacket for waterfowl hunting. For retrieving training, bite tugs made of firm material are recommended, so the dog learns to retrieve with a soft mouth instead of chewing.

For hunting dogs, a collar that is sturdy, clearly visible, and matched to the dog's neck circumference is suitable. Especially at dusk, in forest work, or in confusing terrain, signal collars or reflective collars can improve visibility. It's important that the collar fits securely and doesn't restrict the dog.

For hunting dogs, sturdy, weatherproof, and easy-to-grip leashes are suitable. Depending on the use, guide leashes, tracking leashes, field leashes, or special blood-tracking leashes can be appropriate. Sturdy fittings, a grippy material, and a length matched to the specific situation are important.

Blood tracking primarily requires a tracking leash – a special search leash, usually without a hand strap, made of nylon or Biothane. Both materials are low-maintenance and quick to clean. Signal colors on the leash also ensure good visibility of the handler. It's important that the equipment fits reliably and works well even in wet, dirty, and active conditions.
